'No decision on defence’
fN.Z.PA. Staff Correspondent)
SINGAPORE, March 8.
There had been no Cabinet decision to increase defence spending this year, the Minister of Defence (Mr McCready) said in Singapore today.
The Minister arrived in Singapore last night for a sixday stay after visiting Malaysia, South Vietnam and Thailand during a tour of SouthEast Asia.
Mr McCready had been asked to comment on speculation in New Zealand that the armed services would get a bigger share of the Budget this year after recent remarks by his predecessor and Acting Defence Minister (Mr Thomson). “We have got to get more money if we are going to carry out the same role. It is most essential that New Zealand operate an effective defence force.
“I am not saying that we will get more money, but I am hoping. I sincerely hope I won’t be disappointed when the Budget comes round.”
