Praise by Tories

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, March 8. Fifty-five Conservative M.P.s last night tabled a House of Commons motion congratulating Mr Roy Jenkins, Labour’s deputy leader, on the award of a European unity prize, the Press Association reported. Earlier today Mr Jenkins was awarded the $1285 Charlemagne Prize by the German city of Aachen. The political implications of the award to Mr Jenkins were quickly seized upon by the 55 Conservative M.P.s. In their motion they note “further evidence of growing world opinion which, while holding time servers in contempt, acknowledges men of integrity.” The signatories go on to recall the part Mr Jenkins played in ensuring a majority in the Commons on October 28 last year in support of Britain's entry to the Common Market. The Labour Party is opposing entry. They welcome his acceptance of the prize as “an earnest of his continued and unflagging zeal in support for Britain’s entry into the E.E.C.” He is the third Briton to get the award. Sir Winston Churchill received it in 1955 and it went to Mr Edward Heath in 1963.
