Dashing last half-mile by Intrepid at trials

Intrepid showed that he will be leading contender for Easter Cup honours when he won at the trials held last evening at Addington Raceway. His last half-mile in a sizzling 57 3-ssec was an outstanding run, but the ease with which he achieved this time could hardly have been more impressive.

Violetta began quickly and soon opened up a long lead over Royal Belmer, which was not pushed by J. W. Smolensk! after making a smooth start. Violetta was not hurried when clear by more than 15 lengths in the middle stages, and was allowed to ease down when Intrepid closed rapidly on her and challenged along the inner with less than a furlong left. Both horses were running on solidly, Intrepid winning by half a length after taking 3mln 27 4-ssec for the 13 furlongs.

Violetta’s run was a great one for a four-year-old. She was six lengths clear of Berk-

leigh, with two lengths to Royal Belmer, which shaded Globe Bay, another to make a splendid beginning. Royal Belmer, which is to race in the New Zealand Messenger at Alexandra Park on Saturday, was being eased down at the line. She looks in great heart for her northern campaign, after which she will contest the Easter Cup series. Sassenach tangled at the start and was always at the rear.

The Methven trainer, J. C. Nordqvist, produced Marius and Black Frost to fill the first two placings in the trotters* trial. Al Mundy went to the front after two furlongs and a half and set a leisurely pace. Marius improved from fourth near the half-mile and took the lead with about a furlong to run. He was under restraint at the post, where he had a length to spare over Black Frost, which finished well along the rails to beat Deodatus by half a length for second. Al Mundy was only a head away fourth, clear of Logan Count. Just Money finished sixth after breaking with a furlong left. Going, which broke after half a furlong, and Mighty Chief followed.

The winner took 3:37 3-ssec for the 13 furlongs, the last half-mile in 60 2-ssec, and the final quarter in 31sec. LED ALL WAY Laura led from end to end to win the first free-for-all. The pace was not strong and she took 3min 39sec for the 13 furlongs, the last half-mile in Imin 2 3-ssec, and the final quarter in 30 l-ssec. Dwayne, one of the early favourites for the Hororata Cup on Saturday, showed speed to finish a length from the winner after tangling and losing 60 yards at the start. Blackbeard shaped like an early winner when he held on for third half a length away, with a head to Young Robin and a gap to Morris Pal. Lightsey showed his fitness for the President’s Stakes at Hororata when he won the second free-for-all, recording 3min 34sec, the last half-mile in Imin 2 l-ssec, and the final quarter in 31 l-ssec. He took the lead with less than half a mile left and ran out an easy winner by a length from Looking Forward, which should have a profitable Easter meeting. Brockworth King, too, ran on well for third, shading Robert Mac and Rainbow Hall, with Eden Pal tiring to sixth. FINE WIN Arabian King, a failure last Saturday at Wyndham, showed his true form when he returned the fastest time in three heats over 10 furlongs for two-year-olds. He ran on strongly to beat his stablemate and the pacemaker, Loyal Dream, by a head after returning 2min 44

1- for the full distance, the last half-mile in Imin 3 2-

Holmfield, a likely type of pacer in F. E. Newfield’s team, ran on boldly for third two lengths from Loyal Dream, with Armbro Jodie holding fourth a neck back after receiving the run of the race. Bright King and Rebel Caste headed the others.

Dalestar, a half-brother by Garrison Hanover to Morpheus, shaped pleasingly when he won his heat in 2min 48 2-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 4 2-ssec. Scotch Mirth finished a good second after being slow early. Premier Royal, a stablemate of Arabian King, was two lengths back third, ahead of Willie Win, which showed speed after losing about 48 yards at the start. Mount Bruce paced a useful race to head the others. Peter Gerald, a gelding by Lumber Dream from Millom, made much of the pace and won the other heat in 2min 47sec, the last half-mile in Imin 5 2-ssec. Waitaki Star, after losing a few lengths at the start, did well to finish a head from the winner, with three lengths to Band Light. Then came First Debate and Keravia. Results were:—
