WORST FEB. TOLL
(N.Z. Press Association > WELLINGTON, March 7. The road toll in February—6o killed—was the highest February road toll on record, said the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) today. “Although the monthly toll is only one more than in February last year the total for 1972 is now past 100 and is already slightly higher than the total for the first two months of 1971,” said Mr Gordon.
“I need hardly remind anyone that 1971 was the worst year for traffic fatalities we have recorded.” The Minister said that 44 of the 60 people who died did so as the result of week-end accidents. At 73 per cent, this was the highest proportion of week-end road deaths in any single month. Mr Gordon also said that more than half those who
died were drivers and passengers in motor vehicles and it was these people to whom the bulk of this year’s road safety campaign would be directed. To noon today 122 traffic deaths this year had been reported to the Ministry of Transport. At this time last year the total was 127. The toll this month was 11, compared with 19 at the same time last March.
