SLOW AND ...
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON,
March 6. Tenders for the first stage of the new Christchurch law courts complex may still be let in May.
The Ministry of Works has provided details which are being examined by the Justice Department in Wellington. A spokesman said today, however, that some points had not yet been settled and that the Ministry of Works would probably have to do some more work at the Christchurch site.
The president of the Law Society (Mr S. S. W. Tong) said last Friday that he would discuss with the Secretary of Justice (Mr E. A. Missen) the comment made by the then Minister of Justice (Mr D. J. Riddiford) in June, 1970, that he hoped the tenders for the first stage of the new Christchurch law courts complex would be let early in 1972.
Creaking
A woman went to the aid of the Justice Department in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. She oiled a creaking hinge. A hinge on the door leading from the cells to the No. 1 Court annoyed the police and the court yesterday morning when it creaked as prisoners were escorted to the dock. Each time the door was opened or closed police staff trained to hear the registrar calling the names of the defendants required to appear.
A woman quietly left the public gallery and returned a few minutes later with a container of oil she had purchased from a store near the court
She oiled the hinge, leaving the police soothed and thankful.
