J. Nicklaus pulled his game together in the final few holes, won the Doral-Eastern golf tournament, and moved past A. Palmer into first place on the all-time moneywinning list, Associated Press reported. The 32-year-old Nicklaus scored a two-under-par 70 in the twice-delayed final round and gained a two-stroke victory. It was his second win of the year and 36th of his career. He collected the $30,000 purse and boosted his alltime total—he is in his eleventh professional season —to $1,477,200. Palmer, aged 42, in his eighteenth year as a professional, had led the list for a decade but has slipped to second at $1,471,226. He did not compete in the Doral tournament.
Nicklaus finished with a total of 276—12 under par on the Blue Monster course at the Doral Country Club. L. Trevino and R. Rosburg tied for second at 278.
