Large wool scour to be built on Washdyke site

Recently, the Aucklandbased New Zealand Wool Marketing' Association revealed it was planning to build a large wool scour at Washdyke. At the same time, a notice of application, for consent to change the land use of a three-acre site at Washdyke for a scour, was lodged with the Timaru City Council for consideration by its town planning committee. On Monday evening, the City Council had before it a report of a special meeting Of the committee, which said that no objection had been received in respect of an application by the Trustees Executors and Agency Company (N.Z.), Ltd, and Mrs D. Hudson, acting as agents for the owners, for consent to the change of use of this property for the purpose of establishing and operating a wool scour.

In consenting to the change 'of use sought by the applicants, the meeting decided that suitable arrangements be made to the satisfaction of the city engineer for the disposal of sewage, stormwater and all effluents, and that all relevant provisions of the proposed new district scheme applicable to such use in an Industrial C zone be complied with.

The council also approved the establishment of a wool scour and store, subject to the approval of the Medical Officer of Health—provided drainage is to the satisfaction of the city engineer, and that there is compliance with the provisions of the Health Act and smoke restriction regulations. The approval of the Regional Water Board may be required regarding the supply of ground water. “Shot in the arm” “This could mark the tuming point of the development

lof Washdyke. This is the ful- : filment of the council’s proposals to improve the development and servicing of industrial land. The council’s deliberations have borne fruit,” said Cr J. M. Bishop, chairman of the committee.

The wool scour is one of two major industrial enterprises planned for the Washdyke district, and one which is regarded universally as a “shot in the arm” inasmuch as the growth of heavy industry in the region is concerned.

A consortium, comprising the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, Fletcher Holdings, and T. Borthwick and Sons (A’sia), Ltd, has been investigating the establishment of a large tannery, and there is every indication that such an industry will be created at Washdyke.
