Retailers want to keep present shopping hours, but qualified under the terms of a remit accepted today at the second working day of their annual conference in Rotorua.
Voting on the final form of the remit was held only after the Auckland mover of the original remit on shopping hours, and the Christchurch mover of an alternative remit reached a compromise after two hours and a half of private discussion. The first was: “This conference favours the retention of the present shopping hours operating under awards or in terms of exemptions permitting more flexible hours
1 based on the public interest and granted by the Shops and Offices Tribunal.” RIGHT TO APPEAR The remit then said: “The federation draws attention to the fact that consumer organisations have the right to appear before the Court of Arbitration when it is considering variations of opening and closing hours or when the tribunal is hearing applications for exemptions.” In its final paragraph, the remit drew attention to the extensive list of lines which have been exempted for sale on any day, at any time, by any shop complying with the regulations. he conference began on Saturday and is due to finish tomorrow.
