Suspicions on collapse

BARCELONA (Spain), March 7. Rescue workers have given up hope of finding survivors buried in the rubble of a collapsed apartment building in Barcelona, and speculation grew that the midnight explosion might have been deliberate, the Associated Press reported. Police said last night that a number of empty pistol cartridges had been found among the tons of rubble from the 10-storey building where more than 30 persons were still missing.
Seventeen bodies have been recovered so far, including those of four children. Two persons were rushed to hospital in critical condition.
While confirming reports that seven home-made bombs have rocked public buildings here in the last week, police declined to comment on the possibility of sabotage in the apartment building collapse. “A thorough investigation is on,” a police spokesman said. Earlier reports attributed the blast yesterday to a gas leak.
