Ashburton angler leads
An Ashburton angler, G. Simmons, has caught the heaviest striped marlin in New Zealand so far this summer, according to the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club’s newsletter, “Strike.” Simmons’s fish, which weighed 2961 b, won him the marlin section of the club’s New Year stakes. His angling partner, G. Crum, also of Ashburton, landed a mako shark of 3041 b next day, and his catch qualified as the heaviest shark of the contest.
The deep sea fishing season is now well under way with the numbers of marlin caught showing an increase on last year. Up to February 10, 16 marlin had been caught
