Familiar face

F. R. Christian, the New Zealand Rugby league captain, was confronted by a familiar face when he made the presentations, on behalf of the sponsoring newspaper, to the five winners of the Auckland junior sports awards.

One of the recipients was D. A. Williams, 18, who played alongside Christian in all six tests during the Kiwis’ victorious tour of Britain and France last year. Williams, the youngest person to represent his country in a full Rugby league international, had the unusual distinction of scoring a try the first time that he handled the ball in a test. He is also an accomplished athlete and tennis player. The other winners, also 18, were R. Patel, an Auckland hockey and Brabin Cup cricket representative, P. Medhurst, the 1971 national “cyclist of the year,” M. Nicholson, a member of the Bay of Plenty Freyberg Rose Bowl golf team, and the New Zealand women’s table tennis title-holder, Miss A. Stonestreet.
