Slow, easier trading on Australian markets

Industrial shares traded on an easier tone, and mining stocks weakened on quiet, low turnovers on Australian stock exchanges yesterday.

B.H.P.’s loss, in reaction to the release of the full interim report, dominated the market. The shares were sold down 25c, to 1165 c in Sydney and 1155 c in Melbourne. E.Z.I. incurred one of the largest falls, and dropped 18c to 335 c in Melbourne, and 10c to 345 c in Sydney. Thiess and Myer also recorded substantial losses; Hooker eased off Ic, to 143 c. Despite the generally easier tone, sugars were in demand; C.S.R. and Pioneer both gained. Philip Morris continued its recent strong showing, and added another 10c, at 1120 c. British Tobacco slipped 3c, to 280 c.

Miners weakened as buying support fell away. The C.R.A. group declined, with barrier miner New B.H. showing the largest loss. C.R.A. itself lost 6c, Hamersley lost sc, but Bougainville was unchanged. On the Melbourne exchange Western Mining recovered 12c of Monday’s loss, to close at 295 c. Otherwise, nickels were weak, as were uraniums. Peko lost 6c. Oils were slightly easier, but most moves were marginal. SYDNEY Sales.—Amal. Chem., 40; Ampol, 84; Ansett, 84; A.W.A., 148; Ass’ Sec., 180; A.N.Z., 710; A;G.
