Consideration of area scheme

The Local Government Commission’s North Canterbury provisional scheme will be reported on by the development and finance committee at the next City Council meeting.

In the meantime it will be given further consideration and reported on by the principal officers’ committee. When several councillors said that the council should take a lead in getting together with other local bodies the Mayor (Mr N. G. Pickering) said most of them had already taken their own action. The time now for consultation was when the commission presented its final scheme. Other council news items in brief were: Overseas visiu—The cost of accommodation and some internal travel in the United States by Cr W. Massey, chairman of the airport and traffic committee, had been met by the council, the

chairman of the finance committee (Cr D. R. Dowell) said in reply to a question. The amount would be $5OO to $6OO, although accounts had not been completed. Cr Massey was the guest of Qantas on a flight to North America and he visited Hawaii, Seattle, Portland and San Francisco.

Dog dosing.—The council will have an unchanged dog registration and hydatids fee this year, but hydatids dosing will be on a house-to-house basis with all dogs being dosed with arecoline hydrobromide. The council earlier asked the National Hydatids Council to allow city pet dogs to be treated by bunamidine, but was told that this year’s treatment was an interim measure to ascertain the level of infection in city pet dogs.

City rates.—The council’s rates will be fixed on June 19 when a meeting will be held to approve the annual estimates.

Officers’ committee. — A principal officers’ committee comprising the Town Clerk (Mr M. B. Hayes), the City

Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular), the general manager of the M.E.D. (Mr P. J. Shelley), the City Treasurer (Mr L. A. G. Rich) and the Deputy Town Clerk (Mr J. H. Gray) was appointed. The finance committee said the committee could provide professional and executive support and be able to evaluate major proposals. This would eliminate the waste of time caused by the matter going from committee to committee for individual reports.

New street.—Harold Denton Place will be the name given to a cul-de-sac from Springfield Road to a new block of pensioners’ cottages which will be ready for occupation at the end of next month. Mr H. E. Denton is a former city councillor and recently returned to local body life as a member of the Lyttelton Harbour Board and the Christchurch Transport Board. Pensioner housing. — Palmers Road, North New Brighton (34 units) and Ford Road, Opawa (12 units) have been substituted for 41 pensioner cottage units approved for Andrews Crescent be-

cause the property admin istration committee said there is a greater need in these areas than in Spreydon. When the council applied for the Government subsidy for the Andrews Crescent cottages it did not own the Palmers and Ford Roads properties. Stuyvesant award. — A painting by Brent Wong entitled "Recession” is the council’s decision as its choice for the Peter Stuyvesant Foundation award. The foundation extended its awards to New Zealand last year and the Robert McDougall Art Gallery won a ballot in November entitling it to the award of $5OO for the purchase of a painting or paintings by a contemporary New Zealand artist.

Formal dress.—As well as his robes and chain of office, the Mayor presided wearing a white lace iabot and fluffy lace cuffs. The Town Clerk (Mr M. B. Hayes) was in wig and gown. But many of the male councillors were more comfortable because they had the Mayor’s permission to sit in shirt sleeves.
