French-Aust. co-operation
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter —Copyright) PERTH, Feb. 22. The Western Australia Marine Research Laboratory will be linked in a scientific project with a French space satellite, to track the movements of crayfish larvae, the Minister of Federal Education (Mr Malcolm Fraser) has announced.
The laboratory is the headquarters of an Australian Government, fisheries and oceanography research group studying crayfish in the state. A mystery in the crayfish’s life-cycle concerns the ocean currents on which it drifts during its plankton stage. The minute larvae have been found up to 700 miles from their hatching grounds outside the coastal reefs, but there is little information on the currents carrying them.
