Plea for the cyclist

Sir, —I wish that the Mayor, councillors, Transport Department, Clean Air Society, parents, teachers, motorists ... in fact, anyone who is for road safety and against pollution would provide safe lanes for cyclists. It can be done if we really want them, though I’m not sure how. Steal a bit of the footpaths perhaps? Bridge the gutters? If cycling were made safe many of the cars that pollute and clog our streets would turn out to be owned by people who prefer to cycle anyway. Cycling is “in” overseas.
