Paparoa coal mine

Sir, —Discussion of my article on the Paparoa Coal Mine with people in Blackball has indicated that it may have contained two inaccuracies. First, truckers’ wages, given as “$9 to $lO a day”

were apparently understated somewhat by those who gave me information. Second, I was originally told by “The Smokeless Fuel Company" that they paid “$7 a ton for the coal at the minehead.” Information from other sources later indicated that the actual minehead price to them might be as much as $l.BO less than this which would be about $3 a ton less than ordinary buyers have had to pay. Thinking I may have misunderstood their original statement I rang "The Smokeless Fuel Company” again, only to be told that the price they paid for coal was none of my business and, I suppose, by implication, that how much they are subsidised by taxpayers is not the taxpayers’ business.—Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. January 9, 1972.
