Tail batsmen help World XI recover

\ (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY. The World XI made a great fight-back from 68 for six to finish with 277 in reply to Australia’s first innings score of 312 on the second day of the fourth cricket “test” yesterday.

With a 35-run lead on the first innings Australia scored 11 runs without loss in the 20 minutes remaining before stumps. The Australian fastmedium bowler, R. Massie, who finished with seven for 76 off 20.6 overs, took the first six World XI wickets to fall at a cost of only 27 runs. He threatened to run through the innings until a seventh - wicket partnership of 66 between A. Greig and F. M. Engineer, and an eighth-wicket stand of 82 between Greig and Intikhab Alam stopped the rout. FINAL FLING The innings ended with a bright 47-run, tenth-wicket stand between Intikhab and Bishen Bedi. Intikhab top-scored with 73 not out, which he made in 163 minutes and included 10 4s.

Greig had started the recovery when he hit a 70 in just over three hours, including eight fours. Engineer made 36 in 69 minutes. Massie, who took his sixth wicket in his eleventh over, continued to bowl unchanged for 14 overs. But he had to wait until his twenty-first over before taking his seventh wicket when Bedi was caught for 59 to end the innings.
