FINE SWIMS BY N.Z. GIRLS

Although they were overshadowed by the world record swim of Miss Shane Gould in the 100 metres freestyle, the Canterbury girls — Misses S. J. Hunter and J. Parkhouse — both had meritorious performances in the New South Wales championships at Sydney on Saturday evening.

Miss Hunter was third in the women’s 200 metres backstroke final, which was won by Edinburgh Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Miss D. M. Gurr, of Canada. Miss Hunter’s time of 2min 29.1 sec established a New Zealand junior girls' record and was only I.4sec outside

Miss G. Stirling’s national senior record. In the heats of the event on Saturday afternoon, Miss Hunter was the fifth fastest qualifier, 2.9 sec slower than her time in the final. BEAT HER RECORD Miss Parkhouse was fifth in the 800 metres freestyle but she bettered her own New Zealand senior record set in Dunedin early in December by the encouraging margin of B.lsec. Her time was 9min 26.45ec. The winner of the race, in 9min 7.9 sec, was the outstanding Miss Gould, while Miss N. Moras was second and her sister Karen, who won the gold medal in this event at the Edinburgh Games, was third. The third member of the New Zealand team at the championships, M. Treffers, did not swim as well as expected in the men’s 1500 metres freestyle and he was fourth in 16min 56.8 sec, which was more than lOsec outside his best. G. Windeatt, the Edinburgh Games gold medallist over the distance, won the race in 16min 22.95ec.
