Rescue in surf
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 9. Piha Surf Club members and the rescue helicopter saved a swimmer disabled by cramp about 400 yards offshore at Piha yesterday afternoon. A club member, Mr B. Webber, said several swimmers advised the surf club that they were going for a swim outside the breakers. One of the young men developed bad cramp in a leg, and had to be supported by one of his companions. Another member of the group signalled to the shore that there was trouble, and four club members swam out with rescue tubes. The man in difficulties was supported by the tubes until the rescue helicopter arrived to carry him ashore.
