Surf injuries and rescues

Two surf life-savers were injured and three were plucked from the sea by helicopter in a spectacular end to a surf boat race from Muriwai to Piha yesterday.
The two injur’d men were] in the crew of a Muriwai I boat, which gained second I place but was swamped when! it attempted to beach at the I end of the race in waves of! 10ft to 12ft. The crewmen were thrown out and M. Butt and J. Bertenshaw, the captain, were injured. Butt has a suspected broken ankle and Bertenshaw a severely gashed leg. Both were taken to hospital. | Later, when the Red Beach surf boat was attempting to I beach, its crew also were (thrown out, and two were (picked up from the surf by | helicopter. j One man riding a surf ski was also taken to the beach by the helicopter, and an-
other was picked up by a surf boat.
This incident probably cost the surf boat Miss Rheineck, from the Muriwai club, the chance to win its section of the event. Miss Rheineck was 200 yards clear of another Muriwai boat. Brew 22, when the crew heard a cry for assistance from the surfer on a ski, and turned back to help him.
