SAILING HOME GALLOPS WELL
“The Press” Special Service
AUCKLAND. Sailing Home joined the very few horses which have bettered Imin 40stc for a mile at Takanini when she returned imin 38 4-ssoc on the No. 1 grass yesterday morning. It was as fine a cup trial as could be imagined. Already one of the favourites for tomorrow. Sailing Home, was a centre of attention but there was great interest as well in Breathalyser and Kaukapakapa when they went at speed. The markers were out 12 feet.
Sailing Home set off more like a sprinter than one of the coun> try’s recognised stayers to reel off the first half-mile in 47 2-ssec and she slowed, quite understandably, over the last three furlongs in 39 3-ssec. Only the likes of Stipulate and Passive have returned mile gallops as good. Sailing Home, inclined always to be gross, obvlously improved with her race
for second in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap on Monday.Molten’s Pride and Kaukapakapa kept together at a cracking pace over six furlongs in Imin 12 2-ssec, each three in 36 l-ssec. For the last five furlongs they returned imin.
Few six furlongs gallops at Takanini have been run as quickly. The work was a test of Kaukapakapa’s fitness for the King’s Plate and could not have been more satisfactory.
Molten’s Pride, with a third on Monday, has already run well this week and she looks thoroughly ready for another good showing in the Railway Handicap. Breathalyser strode from the mile and picked up speed to cover six furlongs in Imin 16; 3>ssec. the last three in 37 l-ssec.
Two other cup candidates, Nipawin and Styleman, worked strongly on the plough to cover six furlongs in Imin 16sec, the last four in 49 4-sgec.
