TROTTING Royal Ascot favoured in main race at Canterbury Park

Roval Ascot and Manawaru, third and first respectively in the Ashburton Cup on Mondav, will form a strong favourite combination in the President s Handicap on the tirst night of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow at Addington Raceway.

The field contains only a few runners other than those to race at Ashburton, Manawaru will meet Royal Ascot on 12 yards less favourable terms, while the runnerup in the S5OOO two-mile race, Monarrg, has also been penalised to a 2:12 assessment. There was much to admire about Royal Ascot’s placing at Ashburton. The four-year-old lost about 30 yards at the start and he made up much leeway when the pace was at its hottest over the last halfmile. He appears to be right; back to the outstanding form, he showed last season and: another win cannot be far: off. Manawaru’s penalty of 12 yards should not be sufficient:

to keep him out of the finish. He is usually a most reliable beginner and he should be a big danger to his stablemate.; Monnarg has been a model; of consistency in recent’ months and had she not been

left in the open so far from home at Ashburton, she might have been able to withstand Manawaru’s final challenge. A win for her would be well received and it could easily come in this race. Dreamy Mom, making a fresh start, and Noble Lord

are two smart four-year-olds. Noble Lord’s fourth in the Ashburton Cup suggests that he will do better than his Waimate rival. Van Glory is an interesting acceptor. This fine filly, a splendid third in the Great Northern Derby on Tuesday,

is also engaged at Alexandra Park today. If she is produced in this race, she is cer-| tain to make a bold showing; in spite of the strength of the opposition. If there is to be an upset. Forest King or Walk Alone, may cause it. Betting will be well spread in the second leg, the Hogmanay Stakes, a race in which at least half a dozen runners look to hold strong

chances. Had he finished close up at Ashburton on Mofiday. Dryham Le would have been a commanding favourite. But, after making probably the best beginning of his career, he put no dash into the final two furlongs and he finished well down the track. His earlier form was

in sharp contrast to that showing and he might redeem himself. However, Ashburton running points to Vanadium being one of the brighter prospects, while the Southland mile record-holder, Aranga, and Daisy Charles will appreciate their return

to flying-start racing at Addington. Blackbeard, Robert Mac, Violetta and General Idea are others well capable of taking a prominent part in the finish.
