ROAD TOLL 670

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 30. New Zealand’s road toll rose to an unofficial 670 for the year today with the death of a woman passenger in a two-car collision south of Gore yesterday. The toll so far for the holiday season, which began six days ago, is 17.

The Ministry of Transport reported its road toll total for the year tonight as 669 and the holiday toll as 16, but it said it had not received advice that a seven-year-old girl, knocked off her bicycle on Christmas Day, died in Auckland Hospital today. The Ministry said that since the holiday season started on December 24, a total of 259 people had been injured on the roads and 80 are still on the serious list Ten thousand traffic offences have been detected by traffic officers in the last six days, indicating a lack of care, and 159 drivers have been breathtested, with some being arrested.

The Ministry said that tomorrow, New Year’s Eve, is a critical day “and those who persist in drinking and driving should remember that four people died in

traffic accidents in the early hours last New Year.”

It urged those who intend celebrating New Year with drink to leave their cars at home.
