Fire in bay
Firemen spent nearly 12 hours extinguishing a fire in about 1600 bales of hay yesterday. The fire was reported at 12.35 a.m., and firemen left the scene in Russley Road, about 200 yards south of Memorial Avenue, shortly after noon.
The blaze was attended by one unit from the Harewood brigade and one from Sockburn, but crews were changed during the morning. At one stage a bulldozer was used to break up the stack so that firemen could get at the seat of the fire.
The hay belonged to Mr O. F. S. Martini, of 79 Harakeke Street.
At 11.15 a.m. yesterday one unit from Sockbum and one from Sydenham attended a fire in a fish-shop at 72 Lincoln Road. The fire started in some fat, and spread to a wall, which was slightly damaged.
About noon there were two calls to grass fires within 20 minutes. One unit from the Harewood brigade and one from St Albans attended a fire in grass and scrub at 157 Prestons Road at 12.09 p.m., and one unit from Harewood was sent to a rubbish and grass fire at 630 Hills Road at 12.27 p.m.
