Obituary
DR J. O. MERCER (N.Z, Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 3d. Dr John Oubridge Mercer, C.8.E., who died in Wellington this morning, aged 66, was a leader of the medical profession in New Zealand for many years. He was for many years editor of the “New Zealand i Medical Journal” and served; as a member of the Commission on Social Security which recently completed its report to the Government. Dr Mercer was a past chairman of the council of the Medical Association of New Zealand and past president of the Medical Council. For many years he was head of the pathology department of Wellington Hospital. Born in Halifax, England, the son of a doctor, he was educated at Waitaki Boys’ High School and Otago University, where he graduated in 1929. He was consultant pathologist to the Royal New Zealand Army Medical Corps and was prominent in Anglican Church affairs in Wellington. His son, Dr C. J. Mercer,: is on the staff of Green; Lane Hospital, Auckland. |
