Transvestite contest
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright! BANGKOK. Thailand was recently host to what may have been the world’s first international transvestite beauty contest, the Associated Press reported. It was held at Khonkhaen. a provincial capital about 380 miles north of Bangkok. Thais in no way look down to their transvestites. They call them “kratoeys,” which,
roughly translated, means neither male nor female but somewhere in the middle.
The “Miss Kratoey” title went to Boosaporn Chaikul, aged 16, of Nongkhai, near the Laotian border. A contender from Vientiane, the capital of Laos, known simply as Navarat. took the “Miss Popularity” title from the 100 other contestants. He/she was also runner-up.
Thai newspapers carried pictures of the smiling winners.
