"Landfall" cover design award
A former Frances Hodgkins Fellow, Ralph Hotere, of Dunedin, has won the contest for a design for the cover of the hundredth issue of the New Zealand quarterly “Landfall.” A Christchurch artist, Quentin MacFarlane, earned a very highly commended . rating for his entry and Gordon Walters (Auckland) received a highly commended.
The winning design features a scribbled and repeated manuscript line “Landfall 100” over a black background which itself is placed on an imprint page from an earlier issue of the journal. “Landfall's" editor, Mr R. Dudding, said yesterday that the winning design was striking and appropriate. The artist had used wit and intelligence to produce an unusual effect with ttie “manuscript” idea relating well to “Landfall’s” concentration on creative writing. Mr MacFarlane’s design was less literary, but it was gayer and equally striking, said Mr Dudding. Any of the designs would have graced the cover of the hundredth issue and it was extremely
difficult to make a Anal* choice. The $lOO award was sponsored by Redferns, Ltd, Christchurch, the Peter McLeavey Gallery, Wellington, and the John Leech and Barry Lett Galleries, Auckland The entries are on disslay5 lay at Redferns, Manchester ■ treet The hundredth issue of f "Landfall,” a journal which,! has now been published in Christchurch for a quarter oEt a century, will appear thW week.
