Foreign aid
Sir,—Mr Macbeth may criticise and analyse to bis and “Informed Anglican Laywoman’s” hearts’ content, but to my mind his article failed completely to disprove Mr O’Grady’s main contention—that our principal motive in giving to other, poorer, nations is self-interest, not humanitarianism. Mr Macbeth seems to think that because the Soviet Union gives aid to other countries “with strings attached,” and with an ulterior motive, we, and the United States are completely justified in doing the same—rather like imitating the sharp practice of a business rival because he is doing better than you.—Yours, etc, M. T. MOO&E. December 6, 1971.
