Cochrane’s 10.7 equals sprinting record

The Canterbury senior sprint champion, T. Cochrane (High School Old Boys), equalled the provincial 100 metres record of 10.7 sec with a splendid run at Ham last evening.

This performance moved him into elite company, for the two men with whom he now shares the record—D. W. Mackenzie and A. G. Steel—were both New Zealand champions.

Mackenzie, who originally set the time, converted from a 100 yd run of 9.Bsec, seven years ago, was one of the chief officials at the meeting, organised by the UniversityShirley club. Second place in the 100 metres went to the long jump specialist W. Jowett (University), who just edged out the Canterbury decathlon champion, M. Mene (Technical) at the tape. Both recorded 11.3 sec.

14-YEAR-OLD EXCELS In another grand sprint, the 14-year-old St Margaret’s College athlete, Miss J. Beckett, broke the Canterbury girls* under 15 200 metres record by a tenth of a second. Running very fluently, she swept across the finishing line in 26.1 sec. The previous record was held by Miss A McLean (Waimate). The outstanding junior middle distance runner, D. Green (Christchurch), took advantage of the excellent track conditions to win the senior 800 metres in the fast time of Imin 54.1 sec. He allowed the University

competitor, C. Silcock, to lead through the first 200 metres but from then on dominated proceedings. Silcock recorded his personal best of Imin 59.45ec for the distance when finishing second. FINE SOLO RUN B. Crocker (Christchurch) won the senior 1500 metres with an impressive solo run,

in 3min 59.95ec. The evergreen Olympic runner, J. D. Macdonald, claimed second place in 4min I.ssec, with the New Zealand junior steeplechase champion, M. Couldwell (Old Boys), third in 4min 4.2 sec. The junior 800 metres was comfortably won by W. Sheddan in.2min 2.Bsec from the Hutt Valley harrier, B. Jones. The New Zealand pentathlon champion, Miss B. Poulsen (Technical), was in outstanding form. She won the

women’s 100 metres sprint in the smart time of 12.4 sec, leading Mrs A. Horsnell (Technical) across the line by two strides. She followed this up with a win in the 100 metres hurdles in the fast time of 14.9 sec and a third win in the long jump with a leap of 18ft 6in. Runner-up in the latter event was . Mrs S. in 12.5 sec, another good time. Miss,Beckett was well beaten on this occasion, recording 12.8 sec. •
