Watersider thanked for harbour rescue

Th* Port Lin*, owner of the motor vessel Port Montreal, which It under a Crusader charter, hat thanked a Lyttelton watersider, Mr B. P. Ritchie, of 32 Godley Quay, for going to Hie aid of a crew member at Lyttelton last Friday evening. Mr Ritchie, who is a member of the St John Ambulance subcentre at Lyttelton, jumped in the harbour at No. 7 Wharf to rescue a catering boy The youth had tripped on the wharf and fallen in the harbour. Efforts to save him with ropes failed and Mr Ritchie’s prompt action undoubtedly saved the youth’s life, according to witnesses. The Port Montreal, to which the youth belonged, sailed last Saturday morning. * * * The 1673-ton, German motor vessel Luhesand is discharging perishable cargo, including bananas, from the Pacific Islands, at Lyttelton.

Captain Fritz Hoeft, aged 62, the master of the four-year-old Luhesand, said yesterday that his ship had a complement of 22. The chief officer was German, as were three engineers and an electrician. The second officer, third officer, radio officer and crew were all New Zealanders. “This ship, which has been trading between New Zealand and the Pacific Islands for nearly two years, runs in perfect harmony,” said Captain Hoeft, in fluent English. There was no language problem aboard. Apart from early “teething troubles” resulting from different customs and conditions among Germans and New Zealanders, the ship had experienced excellent co-operation from its complement. “We are a very happy ship,” he said. A New Zealand officer aboard the Luhesand confirmed all that Captain Hoeft had said. “This ship has never been held up by crew trouble,” said the officer. Captain Hoeft, who was sunk three times during the last war —once by mine, once by submarine attack and once by aerial bombardment—lives in Hamburg. His firm, A. F. Harmstorf and Company, ownp 12 ships, six of them fruit carriers such as the Luhesand. The others are two freighters and four tankers.
