General news

Chairman’s gavel The chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (Mr R. S. Scott) now has a gavel to help in the maintenance of orderly procedure at meetings—thanks to the woodwork department at Cashmere High School. Reporting to the school’s board of governors yesterday, the headmaster (Mr T. H. McCombs) said Mr Scott had happened to mention the lack of such an instrument, and the woodwork department had obliged by making one. Christmas cheer More than 68 dozen packets of home-made biscuits and three fruit cakes, not iced, will be sent soon to Scott Base. The cakes and biscuits have been made by wives of members, and women members, of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Antarctic Society. This is the fifth season that the branch has provided Christmas cheer for New Zealanders in the Antarctic. Parties working in the field will receive tneir share to eat on Christmas Day.

Commemoration A service to commemorate those who lost their lives in World War II was held at the Commonwealth War Cemetery near Yokohama, in Japan, on Remembrance Day, November 14. Present at the ceremony were the heads of Commonwealth missions and diplomatic officials, and representatives of service organisations, who laid wreaths on . the Cross of Sacrifice in the cemetery. An interdenominational service was held before the Cross of Sacrifice. Mr G. R. Ansell, New Zealand Ambassador to Japan, represented New Zealand in separate wreath-laying ceremonies in those parts of the cemetery designated for servicemen from particular countries. Tenders for wreck Nelson Fishers, Ltd, has received 12 tenders for the fishing vessel Dolphin which sank in about 50ft of water after striking submerged rocks near the mouth of the Gorge River, in South Westland, last month. It is understood that the boat was carrying a very valuable cargo of uninsured crayfish at the time of the mishap.— (F.0.0.R.)
