Bowling badges abound

Besides competing in the sport, one enthusiastic Christchurch bowler, Mr F. Murray, of Mount Pleasant, also has a hobby associated with the game. Mr Murray is an avid collector of lapel badges from all centres and clubs in New Zealand and overseas, and after several years he has amassed about 5000 badges. The badges adorn the walls of a den Mr Murray built to house the. badges and several other bowling “odds and ends.” Most of the exhibits are New Zealand and Australian badges, but there are also many from Britain, the United States and Japan. Many of the badges Mr Murray has had given to

him, but he obtained others by swapping with members of other dubs, particularly in Australia, which he has visited twice. Among the collection are badges from solicitors’, chemists’, police and commercial travellers’ dubs, all of whom have their own bowling sections. In the photograph Mr Murray (third from right), is showing a portion of his mammoth collection of bowling badges to friends. On the extreme right is Mr H. O’Connor, a well - known member of the Canterbury Bowling Club, who died a few hours after this photograph was taken last Thursday.
