Protest by union
New Zealand Railway Road Service bus drivers want the refreshments room at the Ashburton Railway Station kept open, and will protest to the Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon) about its being closed on December 4.
A special meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants decided to send a telegram to Mr Gordon, asking that the room be kept open, at least until the end of the financial year, so that branch officials could acertain its financial situation and compare this with other refreshment roms in the South Island. Ashburton residents and others affected by the closing down were invited to join the union in protesting to Mr Gordon.
The secretary of the branch (Mr J. F. McDowell) said that he had it from the department that the refreshments room showed a profit during the summer.
Telegrams of support were received from Timaru and Dunedin members of the union, and Mr McDowell said other coach lines which used the refreshments room had indicated their concern at the closing.
