TROTTING Nugent Lass, Arabian King do well at Orari

Nugent Lass and Arabian King earned starts in the New Zealand Golden Slipper Stakes at Waimate on Saturday week when they won two of the four heats of the Two-year-old Parade at trials held yesterday at Orari.

Several others with sound trial form earlier in the season did not perform so creditably yesterday, and they might have prejudiced their chances of gaining a start in the Waimate race, especially as so many candidates for the classic showed to such good advantage in the Spring Time Stakes at Addington on November 20. Vite Cheval (Larnie Scott —Our Bridget) won the first heat in impressive style from Quick Match, which broke at the start. Quick Match (Keep Away—Grace Harwar) finished clear of Rushtime (Gcodland—Cathy’s Song) and Raven Hanover (Diamond Hanover—Viala). The winner returned 2tnin 16 4-ssec for the mile, the last half-mile in Imin 5 4-5 sec.

A likely type of colt by Eagle Arinbro from Silver Wood, in D. G. McCormick’s Ashburton team, won the second heat in 2min 14sec, the last half-mile in Imin 6 3-ssec. He trailed Lady Hod«en (Hodgen’s Surprise—forrissa) and came on to beat her easily by half a length.

Irish Rhythm (Scottish Hanover—Gareen) finished a useful third, ahead of Cranston Kid (Local LightGypsy Lady). Nugent Lass (Bachelor Hanover—Lady Nugent) finished boldly from fourth on the home turn to win the third heat in 2min 15 3-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 6 2-ssec. She is bred to be well above average, and looks likely to develop worth while form later on. A Keep Away—Worthy Scott gelding held on for second, a head in front of Oh-Kay (Eagle Armbro — Lords Lady). Boy High (Bachelor Hanover—Whirlwind) tired to fourth, ahead of Loyal Dream (Lumner Dream —Loyal Whip). Arabian King (TuftSpring Greetings), fought on best to win the final heat in 2min 16 3-ssec, the last half mile in Imin 4 3-ssec. The pacemaker, Wendy Tryax: (Forward—Hal Scotland) was < only a neck back second, with heads to Helen Court (Court Martial—Helen Hayes) and Beedeecee (Keep Away— Forenoon). Victory Star (Tuft —In Motion) and Waitaki Hope (Waitaki Hanover —Subtract) headed the others. Solid efforts No Offence, a candidate for the President’s Handicap at Waimate, and Belle Winter gained narrow but decisive wins in the heats of the 2:20 Trotters’ Race.

No Offence, which should not be long winning, finished solidly to shade Hana Kowhai in the first heat, with Accras and Lucky Kirstin following.

Belle Winter shaded Good Admiral in the other heat. Good Admiral drifted early after starting from 72 yards, but he came home well to record 3min 37 3-5 for the 13 furlongs. The race should help bring him to his peak for the North Beach Handicap on Saturday at Addington.

Bambi, which lost ground after starting from 120 yards, did well to finish third in 3min 33 3-ssec. He looks readv to make a bold showing in the Rawhiti Handicap on Saturday. 26 qualify

Old Timer, an intry for the Roi I’Or Handicap at the Waimate meeting, made a forward showing when he beat Barbara Del by a head in the 2:17 class event. Barbara Del attempted to lead over the last 10 furlongs, with Old Timer trailing her. Old Timer joined her about the furlong post, and did best for a narrow win. Barbara Del’s trial for the New Brighton Stakes was a sound one, and Young Trouble and Moascar, the next two to finish, also went pleasingly.
