‘Dad’s Army’N.Z. style
The last battle in the Maori Wars was fought (and lost beyond any doubt) by the New Zealand Home. Guard “somewhere in New Zealand” during World War 11. Captured himself that stirring night, Archdeacon James Young, now of Nelson, verifies the affair in delighted detail.
“Too many of the stirring deeds of our local patriots have gone unrecorded,” he declares.
This is just one of many extraordinary stories and escapades revealed with relish in the national programme radio documentary "Dad’s Army: Meanwhile Back In N.Z.,” by Jim Henderson, playing at 10.08 p.m. on Saturday. The Kiwi veterans on radio prove just as versatile as their counterparts on English TV.
Adventures among our guardsmen range from Remuera’s sharp-shooters to the pride of Otago, the Shag Valley Home Guard, routed with rotten goose eggs near Dunedin.
This memory-packed halfhour documentary is “a fond and informal salute” to surely the most colourful army ever to take shape in New Zealand.
