The Real Threat » to The Gaines The local dispute as to where the facilities for the 1974 Commonwealth Gaines will be sited and built fades to insignificance against a much greater threat. The Black African vote in favour of the Games being held in New Zealand was not influenced by the present or proposed facilities offered by Christchurch, but was given because Black African leaders foresaw an opportunity to further their campaign against White South Africa. As soon as Christchurch ratepayers are committed to the expenditure of millions of dollars on the Games, the Black African Commonwealth Countries will be in a strong position to threaten a boycott of the Games unless New Zealand agrees to discontinue all sporting contacts with South Africa, particularly the Springbok Rugby Football Tour of 1973. Such a boycott would mean financial disaster for the Games. To have a large proportion of the competing teams withdrawn at a late stage would be a catastrophe! New Zealanders must not allow themselves to be intimidated into discrimination against White South Africa. White South African teams should have the same right to retain their identity as Black South African teams. The same right given to other countries who do not mix their teams although they, too, have mixed populations. Black African leaders should now be asked for an assurance that they will participate in the 1974 Games without any strings attached. Failing this assurance the Games are in jeopardy and should either be cancelled or mounted on a reduced scale. Whatever happens, the Springbok Tour and "other sporting contests with South Africa must go on. Sports and games are for recreation and entertainment. Let us make sure that the Commonwealth Games are not misused as weapons of power politics. A. C. R. Ilderton, Chairman, The Executive Committee SOUTHERN AFRICA FRIENDS ASSOCIATION P.O. BOX 7070, CHRISTCHURCH
