Two Chch shops burgled
Burglars took clothing and watches worth between $3OOO and $4OOO from Harald’s Fashion Bazaar, 470 Papanui Road, on Monday night.
The same night, $1195 worth of clothing was stolen from Homby Menswear, 383 Main South Road, Sockbum.
Entry to the Papanui shop was made by knocking a hole, about 3ft by sft, in a weatherboard wall at the back of the premises. An attempt to force a back door failed. Clothes in cartons and from racks and about 60 watches in a glass cabinet were taken. The cabinet, worth $l6O, was smashed. Clothes taken included women’s frocks, lingerie, night gowns, trouser suits and other garments. The manager, Mr H. F. Rothschild, said that three cars would have been needed to take away the goods. The thieves left by the back door, which was found open yesterday morning. The burglary brings to almost $lO,OOO the value of property stolen from the business ’ in the last two years.
HOLE CUT IN ROOF To get into the Homby shop, the thieves cut a hole in an iron roof, then cut through sarking and the plaster ceiling. They lowered themselves to the floor were they gathered the
clothing and put it in cartons. They went out through the roof, using a ladder in the shop to reach the'hole.
