STARFISH PROBLEM

Scientific doubt

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, Nov. 28. The director of the Australian Museum, Dr Frank Talbot, has said that scientists were still in doubt about the crown of thorns starfish which was devastating coral reefs throughout the world. Dr Talbot, who was speaking in Sydney on his return from a conference of 43 scientists at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington said that no new light had been thrown on the starfish question.

There were many popular theories, but almost no factual evidence about the starfish.

Dr Talbot said that the Great Barrier Reef was still under attack from the starfish, and the centre portion had been severely devasted. He said that a $90,000 Australian Government grant should help shed new light on the problem which could not be attacked until more was known about the starfish.
