Obituary MR R. J. MACKIE

Mr Robert John (Bert) Mackie, who died in Dunedin on Sunday after a long illness, was one of the most skilful race riders in New Zealand about 30 years ago.

Mackie recorded some of his major victories at Riccarton. There he won the Stewards’ and the Members’ Handicap on Lord Nuffield, the Jockey Club Handicap on Howe, the Great Autumn on The Joker, and the Winter Cup on Bashful Lady.

Mackie rode Howe to a narrow win over Balgowan and King’s Ransome in the 1947 Auckland Cup, but after an inquiry the stewards relegated Mr J. H. Marshall’s stayer to third on the grounds of interference.

Howe would have brought off one of the major surprises in the history of the Auckland Cup if his position had been undisturbed, but he was favourite when he won the Summer Cup in the hands of the late L. J. Ellis later at the meeting.

After weight problems forced him into retirement i from race riding Mackie

trained for some time at Invercargill and had some success with the useful winter galloper, Kasr el Nil.
