Diamond wedding
Mr and Mrs Ernest Scott, who had a dairy farm at Redwoodtown, Blenheim, for nearly 30 years, will celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary on Thursday. They now live at Cressy House, a modem eventide home at Lyttelton, where they will celebrate their 60 years of marriage at an afternoon party for relatives and friends on their anniversary. They were married at Crowborough, Sussex, England, where Mr Scott had a dairy farm and glasshouses. They came to New Zealand to (settle in 1921. After his retirement, Mr Scott became a keen bowler, playing at the Blenheim Bowling Club for many years and won a rose bowl. He played in many “friendly games” against clubs in Greymouth, Kaikoura and Christchurch. He.is now 84. For some years after leaving their farm, Mr and Mrs Scott lived in Alabama Road, Blenheim, where Mrs Scott kept house until she was 84. Mrs May Scott, who is nearly 88, must be one of the few dairy farmers’ wives who really enjoyed hand-milking. “I liked working with cows and I had names for ail of them,” she said yesterday. “But I didn’t do much milking after we got machines. It was not the same.” Mrs Scott was also an acitive member of St Christopher’s Church Ladies’ Guild at Redwoodtown for many years. Like most residents at Cressy House, Mr and Mrs Scott take a keen interest in the garden. Mrs Scott has her own piece, where she grows bulbs, daisies, petunias, and pansies. They share the other residents’ pride in the fact that blooms from the Cressy House garden won seven firsts, three seconds and a cup for most entries at a recent Lyttelton flower show.
Mr and Mrs Scott had a family of three, which has now expanded to include 13 grandchildren and 17 greatgrandchildren. The photograph shows the couple at Cressy House yesterday.
