Helicopter pilot dies in crash

The pilot of a Hiller helicopter was killed when it crashed in the bed of the Roaring Billy, a river in the Haast Valley, about 20 miles from the coast, about 6 pan. yesterday.

The dead man was Anthony Hawker, aged about 31, married, with three children under the age of five, or Mussell Point, seven miles south of the Haast village. The crash was seen by Mr W. T. Stephen, a shooter working with the helicopter, who had on hour’s walk to the main highway, where he borrowed a truck used by

other shooters in the area and drove to Haast He reached Haast about 7.15 p.m. The pilot was the. only occupant of the helicopter, which is owned by Luggate Game Packers, Ltd, of Luggate. Otago. It was not known last evening what caused the crash, or vzhether the helicopter was carrying a payload. Mr Hawker had been working in the South Westland area for the helicopter’s owners for some time, and

was considered an experienced helicopter pilot. His machine was one of several owned by the Luggate firm working in the area. A party, comprising a doctor, Constable J. McSkimming, of Haast, and others, will be flown to the vicinity of the crash by helicopter this morning, to bring out the body and carry out an inspection.
