New ketch calls at Lyttelton
A newly-constructed concrete ketch, bound from Bluff to Auckland under power, is at Lyttelton; The 60ft Arakiwa (Foveaux
Strait), which is powered by a diesel engine giving her a cruising speed of seven knots took 17 months to build, according to the owner, Mr E. Randle, of Invercargill, a retired painting contractor who has done some naval service. At Lyttelton yesterday, Mr Randle said that he and his wife built the Arakiwa together, and intended to sail her wherever the mood took them. The ketch was going to Auckland to be fitted out with masts, sails, and rigging, he said. The Randles’ two children, aged eight and nine, are on board and Mrs Randle said that she would give them schooling as they went. If this did not work out the children would go to boarding school. Mr Randle said that the ketch was designed to stay 100 days at sea if required. She could sail between 2000 and 2500 miles under power. Accommodation was provided for 10 persons, he said. Three Dunedin youths are on board the ketch, making the trip, to Auckland.
