No tavern at Akaroa

'N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 29. No tavern premises licence for Akaroa will be granted in the meantime, the Licensing Control Commission has decided. Mr D. L. Clarke, the former proprietor of the Bruce Hotel at Akaroa, asked for authorisation of a tavern licence. The requirements of the residents of Akaroa seemed to the commission to be adequately met by the two existing hotels, even if the distribution of these licences in a geographical sense was a little lopsided. Neither of the existing hotels enjoyed a particularly lucrative business, so that if a tavern, not burdened with .a need to supply accommodation, were to set up in the town some business would inevitably be diverted from the two present hotels. In view of confidential figures supplied to the commission, the creation of a third licence in the form of a tavtm might imperil the continuation of such accommodation as was provided now.
