IMPORTS OF APPLES

Move pleases growers

(N.Z. Press Association)

NELSON, Nov: 29.

Importing United States apples into New Zealand was a welcome move, said the president of the Fruitgrowers’ Federation (Mr P. K. McCliskie, of Nelson) today. "I am very pleased to see them imported in the light of reciprocal trade. This can only help New Zealand’s fruit trading position with America,” he said. New Zealand was the only country in the southern hemisphere which had made any effort to import apples from the United States and Canada. New Zealand’s two main competitors, Australia and South Africa, had "closed doors” to apple imports from America and this also could only help New Zealand’s position, said Mr McCliskie.

The imports of 22,000 cases would carry the markets over until the New Zealand fruit season. It had been planned to import about 70,000 cases but a shortage in the United States had prevented this.
