SPENDING ON AMENITIES

Answer to criticism

Criticism of- his statements concerning the Heathcote County Council’s spending on amenities has been replied to by Mr B. H. Easton, who said that because he had been discussing rate levels he had used figures relating to net pay-, ments out of rates, and had used the latest audited accounts, those for 1969-70. The figures supplied by the County Clerk (Mr K. D. Stills) were gross payments out of all sources of income, said Mr Easton. However, if these figures were compared with the Christchurch City Council’s gross expenditure on local amenities out of all sources of income, the same conclusion would be drawn, Mr Easton said. This was that if Heathcote spent proportionately as much on amenities as did the City Council, the Heathcote rate levels would be much higher. According to figures supplied by Mr Easton, gross expenditure per capita on amenities was $6.92 for Christchurch City in 1969-70, compared with Heathcote totals of $1.75 in 1969-70 and $4.73 in 1970-71.
