Trade union co-operation

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)

MELBOURNE, Nov. 28. The Australian Council of Trade Unions has moved to set up much closer relations with the New Zealand trade union movement.

The A.C.T.U. executive decided in Melbourne to estalish the Australian and New Zealand Trade Union Co-or-dinating Council, which will meet at least once a year. The president of the A.C.T.U. (Mr R. Hawke) said that a co-ordinating council would provide the opportunity for co-operation and comparison on levels of wages and conditions.

This was very much needed in industrial disputes which had an international significane, he said. It would also provide the opportunity for co-operation where a firm attempted to move its operation from one country to another in an attempt to get lower wage rates.
