Melbourne pools
Sir,—Mr A. J. Donaldson made a mistake in comparing the Melbourne Olympic Pool, as a failure, with the proposed Queen Elizabeth II Pai;k pool. One is surrounded by a city and its business premises and traffic; the other is surrounded by a huge and growing residential area. One contains few children, the potential swimmers, while the other is teeming with children and babies. Would Mr Donaldson agree that the Games pool is designed to train swimmers? Compared with suburban pools, how many swimmers did the Centennial Pool train during the last five years? As one Canterbury centre official stated, “Swimming is done in the suburbs.” Mr Donaldson knows that figures prove this statement is correct.—Yours, etC ’’ FACE THE FACTS. November 4, 1971. [Mr Donaldson would not comment further on this subject.]
