Soviet Union strikes Rutherford medal
The University of Canterbury, as the main repository of memorabilia of Lord Rutherford, has received a medal struck by the Soviet Academy of Sciences in recognition of the hundredth anniversary of Lord Rutherford’s birth.
Advising the University Council of this yesterday, the Vice-Chancellor (Professor N. C. Phillips) said that the academy had held a colloquium on the work of Lord Rutherford in Moscow to mark the occasion. The medal had been issued
Rescue boat called out
The Kaikoura lifeboat Rescue II was called out at 11.30 a.m. yesterday when the fishing boat Denise was disabled with engine failure about half a mile from the Kowai River, just south of the Kaikoura Peninsula. The lifeboat was not required, however, as another fishing boat The Molly was in the area and took the disabled boat in tow.
The Molly heard the call for assistance, but because its own transmitter was not working, was unable to let the shore station know it was going to take the Denise in tow.

He had written to the Academy of Sciences, thanking it for the medal, and advising it that he would send a copy of the proceedings of the New Zealand symposium on Rutherford, held in August, when it was published. '
