Summit Road gap
The Akaroa County’s resident engineer (Mr K. Paulin) will investigate the route of a 16-mile road to link the gap in the Summit Road between Gebbies Pass and near the Hili Top, an behalf of the Akaroa, Waiwera and Mount Herbert County Councils. He will report to the councils and the Ministry of Works.
The three county councils have been given a grant of 83000 from the roads vote (five to one subsidy) for the work.
The chairman (Mr G. P. A. de Latour) at the Akaroa County Council meeting on Friday said the counties had long sought the completion of the Summit Road. Later, when the council was discussing the Local Gov-; ernment Commission’s provi-i sional scheme for North Can- ) terbury, Mr de Latour remarked with a smile, that the county “will not object at all to the Christchurch City bounadry running along our Summit Road.” Civil defence—Mr de Latour said he had attended a meeting of quite a number of women and a few men at Okains Bay interested in civil defence. One criticism was of his being the controller because he lived in an inaccessible area. Cr A. T. Boleyn said that after the meeting some people had expressed themselves as being most appreciative of Mr de Latour’s visit and explanation of the county scheme for civil defence.
Gaiety Hall—The Akaroa Town Hall committee decided to make available $591 additional funds to enable the Gaiety Hall committee to undertake major renovations to the toilets. The total cost will be $1691. Cr L. G. Eade said the toilets were in a verv bad state of repair. Boat trailers—There was considerable congestion in Akaroa on Labour Day weekend, particularly because of indiscriminate parking of boat trailers which caused wasted parking space. The Transport Department traffic officer suggested a provision of a boat trailer park near the launching ramp with signs drawing attention to it. The Akaroa town committee was! asked to look into the problem.
Sewerage—The County I Engineer (Mr Paulin) is to explore the possibility of small, central collection or treatment plants, for future subdivisions in the county. Cr W. S. L. Mcßae said that the matter was urgent because there was no drainage. Septic tanks on hillsides only resulted in effluent going on to other properties. He instanced a proposed subdivision of 18 sections by G. A. Reese, at Takamatua, as possibly suitable for a central collection scheme. Mr de Latour said that the only time the council had tried to insist on a sewerage scheme for a subdivision it had been shown to make the subdivision hopelessly uneconomic.
