Submarine hunt

(HZ. Press Association? WELLINGTON, Nov. 28.

The R.N.Z.A.F. would take part in an international submarine-hunting contest against Australia, Britain and Canada this week, said the Chief of Air Staff (Air Vice-Marshal D.

F. St George), who returned to Wellington during the week-end after a visit to the United States.

It had been suggested that reductions in defence spending would prevent the R.N.Z.A.F. from taking part in the contest, to be held

off Vancouver Island between December 3 and 5.

Air Vice-Marshal St George said he thought New Zealand would do quite well in the contest. In previous competitions the R.NZ.A.F. had never been disgraced.

New Zealand has won the contest once, in 1963, since it began 10 years ago. The captain of the aircraft

which won the 1965 event, Squadron Leader P. J. McKay, will represent the R.N.Z.A.F. in the competition again this year.
